I am too lazy for formatting right now. :D
Mandatory Questions 1. What about you is heroic? Many would claim that nothing about me is heroic, if we are being perfectly honest. It is, perhaps, that they view things from the wrong perspective. I would do anything for country and commander. I view that as heroic – wouldn’t you?
2. What about you is social? What do you like about people? I am not a very social person, outside of my pack. People are too noisy, too smelly, too much like sheep. I like to watch them from a distance.
3. Of what benefit could you be to the current group? I do not question orders. I have skills beyond those of my fellow soldiers. My superiors view this as a benefit.
4. Why would you choose to join the current group? I did not choose them, they chose me and I came willingly. They are the future. I would like to be a part of that future.
5. Invent an adventure/plot that your character would actively undertake (as opposed to just tagging along)? Anything that would involve mayhem and bloodshed in large amounts.
Personal Questions 1. What is your real, birth name? What name do you use? My birth name is Friedrich Johann Köhler. I go by Friedrich or Köhler.
2. Do you have a nickname? What is it, and where did you get it? Richi. It is merely a pet form of Friedrich, and only my mother calls me it.
3. What do you look like? (Include height, weight, hair, eyes, skin, apparent age, and distinguishing features)
I am five feet, ten inches tall, and weigh about one-thirty. One might suppose that this means I am slender. I am not slender – I am too angular to fit that description – “skin and bone” and “gawky” are terms I have heard often.
My hair is shaggy, straight and black-brown, though in the right light there are red highlights. My eyes are hazel; they play tricks. My eyes appear to change from brown to green to grey to blue depending on everything from my mood through my clothing. My skin is pale, and I have freckles when I get enough sun. I rarely get enough sun. I look my age – thirty – and my nose has been broken twice. It has yet to be set correctly.
4. How do you dress most of the time? Uniforms.
5. How do you "dress up?" I don’t.
6. How do you "dress down?" I don’t.
7. What do you wear when you go to sleep? Uniform undershirts and boxers.
8. Do you wear any jewelry? I have a death’s head ring. I do not wear it. It becomes too uncomfortable when changing. I occasionally wear a collar – but not in this form.
9. In your opinion, what is your best feature? My voice.
10. What's your real birth date? October 10th, 1910, at three o’clock in the morning.
11. Where do you live? Describe it: Is it messy, neat, avant-garde, sparse, etc.? I live in a small, one room flat on the seventh floor of an apartment the military annexed to serve as barracks. It is sparse. The only things in my quarters are a footlocker, a pile of blankets, a shortwave radio and a phonograph player.
12. Do you own a car? Describe it. They would never allow this.
13. What is your most prized possession? Why do you value it so much? My coat. It is well worn and fits me perfectly. I value it because I made it, and none of my other coats are as comfortable.
14. What one word best describes you? Hostile.
Familial Questions
1. What was your family like? It was me, my father, my mother and my younger brother. We were all…very quiet, for the most part. Nothing stands out. We coexisted, and that was about as far as familial interactions went.
2. Who was your father, and what was he like? Niklas Köhler Senior. He is a banker, though his trade is slim these days. He was calm, quiet, vaguely intimidating when I misbehaved. He had a very subtle sense of humor, and could make such art with his carving knife. That trait he learned from his father as a boy, and he passed it on to me.
3. Who was your mother, and what was she like? Sofie Klein. She was a seamstress. Louder than my father, but still very quiet. She was very gentle – still is. I think she disapproves of me – at the very least, I know she knows that I never tell her the full truth.
4. What was your parents marriage like? Were they married? Did they remain married? They were married, and – with the exception of a month when they had a huge disagreement – have remained devoted to one another for as long as I can remember. They are still married.
5. What were your siblings names? What were they like? Niklas Jonas; and he was…there. He is twelve years younger than I, so I was out of the house most of the time when he was young. Then as we grew older we began to argue – politics, mostly. He is a bright lad, away at school studying economics. I do not trust him in the least.
6. What's the worst thing one of your siblings ever did to you? What's the worst thing you've done to one of your siblings? Niklas cursed me out of the house last time I visited home. We had a fight – he broke my nose, I broke his hand. We don’t see eye to eye as adults.
7. When's the last time you saw any member of your family? Where are they now? I saw Mother last; a year and a half ago (summer of 1939). I was on leave. Father was taking Niklas to some university in Palermo, Italy; neither were home. They are all still in Berlin the last time I had word, except Niklas, who is still in Italy.
8. Did you ever meet any other family members? Who were they? What did you think of them? Father’s parents both died when he was young; and he was an only child. I have met Mother’s mother, a sweet old woman, but mother’s Father traveled extensively and was not there when we visited. He has since passed on, and she lives with Mother’s brother; who I have also met, along with his children. I did not care for them.
Childhood Questions 1. What is your first memory? The earliest thing I remember clearly is playing soldier in the street with the other children of my neighborhood. I remember is telling the little girl from the house next to ours that she could not play at being a soldier. She kicked me in the shin.
2. What was your favorite toy? I had a stuffed bear named Dietrich. He was my favorite until I was around seven and discovered marbles and dice.
3. What was your favorite game? I liked marbles.
4. Any non-family member adults stick out in your mind? Who were they, and how did you know them? Why do they stick out? Herr Austerlitz . He was the school master of the primary school I went to. He had a son in the war, and I used to pester him with many questions, day in and day out. He would show me maps of troop movement, and show me letters of where his son was at the time. He hanged himself in his office when his son was killed in battle.
5. Who was your best friend when you were growing up? I was a mostly solitary child; I did not have a “best” friend, I played in groups or not at all.
6. What is your fondest, childhood memory? Christmas, 1919. I received a folding carving knife with an ivory handle from my father, with the promise that he would teach me to carve. I still carry it to this day.
7. What is your worst childhood memory? Herr Austerlitz’s death. I didn’t understand it. Adolescent Questions
1. How old were you when you went on your first date? Sixteen.
2. It is common for one's view of authority to develop in their adolescent years. What is your view of authority, and what event most affected it? My view of authority is that it is good to be on the side of it. Very little in my adolescence affected this stance, I reached this conclusion as a young adult, several years later.
3. What were you like in high school? What "clique" did you best fit in with? I had no clique. I was bad at sports, and was not friendly or handsome enough to be considered a charmer. I considered myself an artist, as did some of my peers, but I never sought them out – I liked it on my own.
4. What were your high school goals? University.
5. Who was your idol when you were growing up? Who did you first fantasize about in your life? Any soldier, truly – I feel like I repeat myself, but these are the facts.
6. What is your favorite memory from adolescence? I entered a carving I had done in a local art show. I won second prize, and my art professor bought it for what seemed to be a lot of money at the time. As far as I know it is still in my high school.
7. What is your worst memory from adolescence? I got into an argument with a sportsman on the football pitch. He had his friends hold me still so he could break my nose. That was the first time – I resent it more than the second.
Occupational Questions 1. Do you have a job? What is it? Do you like it? If no job, where does your money come from? I have a job – I am a soldier, a Nazi – an enforcer, to be specific. I find resistance members and try to make them talk; I intimidate, threaten, barter, bargain and bribe. I like it enough – even if it does require me to stay in this city.
2. What is your boss or employer like? (Or publisher, or agent, or whatever.) They exist. I, for the most part, respect them – if they have reached a rank where they can command me, there is generally more there than meets the eye.
3. What are your co-workers like? Do you get along with them? Any in particular? Which ones don't you get along with? My coworkers vary between the criminally stupid and the criminally insane. 3. Who is your worst enemy? Describe them and why you don't get along. My worst enemy is no longer living. He was a weak dog, and never saw what was in front of his face. He never saw that I did not see things his way.
4. What bands do you like? Do you even pay attention? I enjoy the Count Basie Orchestra, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Perhaps one day I shall travel to America and see if they sound as interesting in person.
5. What record hasn't left your player since you purchased it? Why? I have a 78 of a song called “Sing Sing Sing,” that generally stays there. The song takes up both sides of the record, and I like the drums. It stays in the phonograph since I lost the sleeve, and I do not think it would be easy to find this record again.
